Choose by the calls you actually receive
| Need | Voicemail | AI receptionist | Human answering service |
|---|---|---|---|
| Take a message | Yes, after the caller records it. | Yes, through a guided conversation. | Usually; confirm with provider. |
| Answer routine questions | No. | Using approved business information. | Using the provider's brief and staffing. |
| Book or transfer | Caller must wait for a callback. | Possible when configured and tested. | Provider-dependent. |
| Unusual or sensitive call | Message for a person. | Needs a clear handoff rule. | A trained person may handle more nuance. |
An AI receptionist is useful when many calls have known answers: hours, services, message taking, straightforward bookings or transfers. It is less suitable when every conversation requires a judgment call. Start with one call type and test the unknown-question path before forwarding a live number.
What does it cost?
Our basic setup and monthly management fees are on the Reception service page. The client-owned call platform and usage are separate from our setup and management fee. The cost guide shows dated examples. Ask a human answering service for its current quote so you can compare the same call volume and coverage.
Questions to settle before switching
- Which calls should staff answer first?
- Which questions may be answered from an approved list?
- Where does an unknown or urgent call go?
- Who checks messages and missed transfers the next day?
ElevenLabs documents staff-first answering, transfers and fallback settings. Those settings still need to be configured and tested for the actual business. Callers must be told when they interact with AI under the platform's disclosure guidance.
